Dear 2nd Grade Families,
Second graders are continuing to work hard! We are raising the bar by tracking the amount of time it takes to transition when retrieving and returning materials. Students have been busy showing what they know this week, which will help guide instructional strategies that fit their needs. Second graders wrote a personal narrative, took a STAR math test, and participated in a reading inventory. In addition to this important work, other highlights include investigating addition strategies and analog clocks in math, reading books on www.raz-kids.com, an online reading site with individually leveled books, and learning about rights and responsibilities in social studies.
Your child may have shared with you that we opened the science center in the classroom this week. At this station, students work on developing their observation skills, looking closely at details through a microscope and magnifying lens, and practice how to record those observations. In a combined science/art enrichment lesson, students drew observations of the garden as well. Speaking of the garden, Mrs. Wright helped us harvest edamame for the luncheon that is coming up soon!
After establishing expectations of quality second grade work in school, homework will begin the week of September 22nd. At that point, expectations will be clear to students and sent home for you to support your child. Homework information will also be updated on the website, mrsleonard2ndgrade.weebly.com.
I look forward to seeing you next week on Thursday evening for Open House. In the meantime, feel free to contact me by email, phone, or note!

Dear 2nd Grade Families,
The first week of school has been a busy one in Mrs. Leonard’s classroom. During the first few weeks of school we are working on the classroom environment, routines, and quality of work to ensure that everyone has the most productive year possible. Here are some of the highlights of the week that you could talk about with your child:
I am extremely proud of the hard work the students have accomplished this week. They have learned where the classroom materials belong, quickly and eagerly returning items to their places during transitions. We are going to keep a neat and organized room!! They are responsible for classroom jobs, including feeding our fish, organizing the science and writing center, and managing the classroom library.
Thank you for returning the multitude of papers that need to be filled out at the beginning of the year, including the parent survey! All students should send in their summer reading list by Monday. Next Thursday is the Book Blast and Barbeque at Wamogo, which celebrates the summer reading.
Finally, please check out the class web page at mrsleonard2ndgrade.weebly.com or by linking it through rsd6.org. I will include weekly updates and photos on the web page. We are also working on a video to share that will take you on a tour of our room.
I look forward to working with you throughout this year.
