We have been working on specific traits we are calling "brain growers" because, with the growth mindset JMS is cultivating, these qualities can be taught, learned, and help us grow to be the best students and people we can be. Second graders are setting goals for themselves in the categories of being resilient, persistent, flexible, kind, safe, and optimistic. They are looking for opportunities to point out when classmates demonstrate these traits, as well as themselves. We will be adding to the posters we've created in the classroom with pictures illustrating students actively using these words. Please help us by sending in photos of your children using these words at home too. Examples include a picture of your daughter persistently practicing a karate move until she gets it just right, a photo of your son optimistically giving a thumbs up before a lacrosse match, or a shot of your whole family safely riding bikes with helmets on. Pictures can either be emailed or sent in to school, with a caption, to be hung up on the corresponding brain grower poster. Hopefully you will have a great conversation with your child about brain growers, see them using the words activitely at home, and hear about them being used every day at school.
